My Recent Visits to Chile and Brazil are Pastoral - Kaigama

In an interview with the Director of Communication of Jos, Fr. Alexander Dung, The Catholic Archbishop of Jos, President Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and President Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA) Most Rev. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama gives a detail account of his recent trip to the south American Countries of Chile and Brazil.

Kaigama opines "I was invited by Aid to the Church in Need Brazil and Chile, to their national offices to try to raise the awareness in those countries of the situation and needs of the persecuted or suffering Church.

 I spoke largely on the situation of the Nigerian Church and the impact of Boko Haram on Nigeria.

 I left  Lagos 4th April to Johannesburg then from Johannesburg left on the 5th to São Paulo, Brazil. Spent night in São Paulo to enable me get a visa  next day 6th April to Chile since Chile does not have an embassy in Nigeria. Arrived 

Santiago, Chile on the 6th of April  A translator was available to help translate from Spanish to English and English to Spanidh. I stayed with a lively family who have five children. They were most welcoming and warm. 

 On Thursday April 7th. I had a  Conference with a group of Catholic schools ( students and parents,  Interview with a very  important newspaper in Chile, Mass and Interview in the most important University in Chile, Mass  followed by a Conference in  San Juan Apostol Church.

On Friday April 8th: My Conference with Catholic school ( students and parents ). Conference with Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Chile in their annual meeting. The President is the Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati ( and also he is Archbishop of Santiago. Interview with two catholic magazine/newspapers. Mass and Conference in  San Vicente de Paul Church.

 On Saturday April 9th: My Visit and prayer at the Grotto of Lourdes ( a symbolic Chilean place. Greetings at the beginning of Mass at a well attended ordination of two priests three deacons and one final profession of a male religious, followed  by a Conference with large group of parish priests and pastoral communities in a sector of Santiago and then departure to take flight to Sao Paulo. Back in Brazil, I celebrated Mass at Mariapolis a city of Mary, followed by a conference, a presentation to the CNBB (Brazilian Bishops National Conference, over three hundred bishops at the Shrine of Aparecida, and several interviews with the Catholic and secular press, all eager to know more about Boko Haram and the fate  of the kidnapped Chibok girls, visit to Guaratingeta, a rehabilitation center for drug/alcohol addicts. Returned to Jos on Saturday".
